There is a fascinating history to the Cambodia gambling dens that sit just across the dividing line from nearby Thailand, where gambling hall gaming is not legal. Eight casinos are situated in a generally tiny space in the municipality of Poipet in Cambodia. This band of Cambodia casinos is in a perfect spot, a three to 4 hour travel from Bangkok and Macao, the two largest gambling centers in Asia. Cambodia gambling halls do a thriving business with Thai workers and tourists from Malaysia, Japan, South Korea, and Singapore, with only very couple of Westerners. The astonishing income gained from the gambling dens ranges from $7.5 million to more than twelve and a half million dollars, and there are a few restrictions requirements for casino ownership. Ownership is presumed to be mainly Thai; however, investment sources are cryptic. The borders are officially open from 0900 to 5:00 p.m., and although visas are for all intents and purposes needed to pass, there are means around this, as is true of most borders.

The original Cambodia casinos opened in Phnom Penh in the mid nineties, but were forced to close in 1998, leaving only 1 casino in the capital, the Naga Resort. The Naga, an anchored barge gambling hall, highlights one hundred and fifty slot machines and 60 tables. The Naga gambling den never closes with forty two tables of mini-baccarat chemin de fer, four tables of 21, 10 of roulette, 2 of Caribbean Stud Poker, and a single table each of Pai-Gow and Tai-Sai.

The initial gambling den in Poipet, the Holiday Palace, premiered in the late nineties and the Golden Crown before long followed. There are 150 slot machine games and five tables at the Golden Crown and 104 one armed bandits and sixty eight tables at the Holiday Palace. The newer Holiday Palace Casino and Resort contains 300 slot machine games and 70 table games and the Princess Hotel and Casino, also in Poipet, has 166 one armed bandits and 96 gaming tables, including eighty seven punto banco (the most popular game), Fan Tan, and Pai Gow. Also, there is the Casino Tropicana, with one hundred and thirty five slot machines and sixty six of the normal gaming tables, as well as a single table of Casino Stud Poker. One more of the eight casinos in Poipet, also in a hotel, is the Princess Casino with 166 slots and 97 games. The Star Vegas Casino is is located in an all-inclusive resort and hotel building that highlights a number of conveniences on top of the gambling den, which offers 10,000 square feet of one hundred and thirty one armed bandits and 88 table games.
